DAB vs. FM Digital Radio

Radio broadcasts are transmitted more often digital - on the web. The DAB standard ekes out a shadowy existence on the other hand, although he really should replace the analog broadcasting. The good old FM radio does not appear to be used. In television, the digital standard DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting) has quickly established.

The little sister for the radio called DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) ekes out a niche but so far - although the resulting 15 years ago digital radio standard almost fully available in Germany. Experts are skeptical that the official successor of the analog standards will succeed FM, establishing itself as a transmission method.

Originally by 2010, all radio stations should be broadcasting without the FM on DAB have changed. But the reality is different: the radio stations broadcast on FM continues, the deadline for the conversion was only recently extended to 2015 and even 2025. And the reality in homes is another.

"We have estimated the regional media authorities only around 500,000 DAB radio devices in circulation," Pit says Klein of the journal "Sat + cable" in Munich. A DAB-enabled device currently costs still 80 to 130 euros. FM receiver can be had for much less money. 100 € for two to three channels? One advantage of DAB is the possibility of a greater variety of programs, said Michael Judge, CEO of the nationwide digital radio platform.

But the reality is so far rare. Judge admits: "In Bavaria there are many local and regional stations in northern Germany, however, is not the supply as well.." This Chris de Leuw confirmed by the magazine "Audio Video Photo Picture" in Hamburg: "In some areas it receives two or three channels No one buys a new radio station for 100 € to receive two channels.." One advantage of DAB is that can be transmitted through the digitization of thousands of simple additional information.

"This can be thought of as the digital television. There is the possibility to electronic program guides, track information and live news on the screen," says Klein. Therefore also support the DAB car manufacturer, said Richter. "Allow data storage and parking information transmitted by DAB in the car," he explained.

In addition, a DAB radio program with Germany is far received over the same frequency. Where are the benefits? Digital Audio Broadcasting offers better sound quality when the transmission is via high bit rates. "On the way listening, and it is mostly used for radio, but the people are satisfied with the FM quality," says de Leuw.

"Real, practical benefits to consumers are yet to be discerned." And digital radio a reality in other ways. Satellite and Internet radio stations are many digital receive. "Meanwhile, many Internet radio stations are sold, by which you can listen to digital radio," says de Leuw. The experts may agree that the future of radio is digital.

"Whether the digitization takes place but on DAB, is questionable," said Sven Hansen, editor of the computer magazine "c't" from Hanover. Whether this will succeed as DAB digital radio standard, is primarily a political decision. Analog In-sel Germany "are already far flowed million in fee revenue in the DAB expansion," Hansen has pointed out.

But if not disappear from a force spectrum needs the analog capacity at some point and the manufacturers are obliged to build in digital tuner instead of the analog counterpart, the transition to Klein's view is never work. From 2015, manufacturers of radios are required at least once before, integrating digital tuners in the device - as stated in a draft bill to amend the Telecommunications Act.

In other European countries, DAB has been enforced. "We can not therefore now sit on our island and watch analog, upgrade as our European neighbors," says DAB proponents judge. Even if it should come with a switch to DAB, it will not be abrupt. "Until then, you can buy with a clear conscience and an FM radio," says Hansen.

Those who still want to buy a DAB-enabled device, which should ensure that it is compatible with DAB + is equal to or purchase a "multi-standard device" that can simultaneously receive DAB, FM and Internet radio. A proliferation of receivers would also give new impetus to the offer. Mid-January, the commission responsible for licensing and supervision of the Media Authorities (ZAK) has cleared the way to six private providers of radio programs can operate through their DAB + broadcast nationwide.

Three slots are still available.
