Cyber attacks against South Korea

Forty government sites and South Korean companies have been victims of a vast computer attack on Friday. Among the targets were the sites of the South Korean Presidential Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or U.S. forces in Korea. These sites have been blocked by what looked like a denial of service, that is to say a very large number of connections that are designed to saturate a server.

According to the South Korean government, these attacks are strongly reminiscent of previous attacks originating in China. But for the computer security company AhnLab, it is currently not possible to have certainty about the origin of attacks. In 2009, the government had accused North Korea of cyber attacks, but further analysis did not confirm the possible involvement of Pyongyang.

According to press South Korea, North Korea has established a military unit specializing in computer hacking and denial of service attacks.
