Sixteen million dollars raised for Wikipedia

The Wikimedia Foundation, which manages the online collaborative encyclopedia Wikipedia and other projects like Wikimedia Commons, said it had collected $ 16 million (12 million) during its annual appeal for donations in late 2010. "As to barely fifty days, the shortest period of appeal for donations in the history of Wikimedia, the foundation has received an average of 22 dollars (16.5 euros) per donation, from people living in 140 different countries, and reached its goal.

The Wikimedia Foundation has received over 500,000 donations, twice more than in 2009, where we received 230,000 individual donations, "details the foundation in a statement. According to figures released by the Wikimedia Foundation in November, the online encyclopedia has continued a steady growth of attendance in 2009, with 22% more visitors in one year (398 million) and 13.7 billion pages consulted on the year (+ 20%), without counting the visits on mobile phones.

The number of active contributors, however, continued its decline, which could give credence to the theory of a certain maturity of the encyclopedia, which has reached a critical mass that no longer needs as many contributors as in its early years. The foundation expects a budget of $ 20.4 million (15.3 million) for 2010, an amount that would cover its structural costs (hosting, bandwidth ...), the salaries of its permanent and miscellaneous expenses.

The foundation also receives donations from corporations and companies, including Sun Microsystems, Google, Bing and various U.S. foundations.
