Microsoft profit jumps 31%, but passes behind the Apple

The U.S. computer group Microsoft has published Thursday, April 28, net income up 31% to 5.23 billion dollars (3.52 billion euros) for the third quarter of fiscal offset. The turnover shown up 10% to 16.43 billion (11.07 billion euros). Despite these findings, Microsoft has now overtaken by Apple, not only in terms of turnover - which was already the case for six months - but also in terms of net profit for the first time in twenty years, several commentators .

Last week, Apple released a quarterly profit almost doubled in one year, from $ 5.99 billion (4.04 billion euros) for a turnover of 26.7 billion dollars (17.99 billion), up 83%. But at Microsoft, the chief financial officer, Peter Klein, welcomed the results "solid" and conceded only one disappointment, due to insufficient monetization of search engine Bing, who nevertheless continues to nibble away market share (13 , 9% in the U.S.

in March, according to the firm Comscore). As a result, the partnership with Yahoo, reached in July 2009, does not extend. "The integration between Yahoo and Bing in the U.S. and Canada is taking longer than expected, and revenues are below our expectations. We slowed our efforts to integrate internationally, "said director of investor relations, Bill Koefoed, during a conference call with analysts.

In addition, revenues from Windows programs, the second biggest activity the group behind Office (vocational programs) fell 4.4% to 4.44 billion. Mr. Klein stressed that this position suffers from an unfavorable comparison, given the inflated sales a year ago by recent release of the operating system Windows 7.

INCREASED COMPETITION IN THE PUBLIC MARKET According to Mr. Klein, companies continue to renew their equipment and will continue on this trend into next year. But the consumer market fell 8% a year, including competition from other devices - including shelves, a segment dominated by Apple, where Google's Android system is a breakthrough, but where Microsoft programs are almost absent.

Finally evoking telephones, Mr Koefoed said that the alliance with Nokia announced earlier this year would mark a "new stage", while the Windows 7 Phone sentence to impose. The group also announced it had sold 2, 7 million Xbox 360 consoles in its fiscal third quarter. The share was down 1.27% to 26.37 dollars (17.77 euros) in trade after the close of the NYSE, although many analysts as Walter Pritchard Citi, found that the group "has withstood a weak PC market.
