Google will distribute computers running Chrome OS

Google will launch next month the first computers using its new operating system, Chrome, with a particular distribution model contrasts with those of Microsoft or Apple. These computers manufactured by Acer and Samsung, will be sold after June 15 the United States and several European countries, including France.

Acer models will be sold from $ 349, those from Samsung's $ 429, said vice-president of Google, Sundar Pichai, Google's at I / O, the big conference where Google has its new . Unlike most other operating systems, Chrome OS (Operating System) is designed to operate "in the clouds", that is to say in connection with the Internet.

This software minimalist who wants faster than conventional operating systems, uses all the Google services with an emphasis on online applications at the expense of programs installed on the hard disk of the computer. For the user interface is very similar to the Chrome browser. The "Chromebooks" come with a screen diagonal of 12.1 inches (30.7 cm), with a shell of only 2 cm and weighing 1.5 kg, according to Samsung.

Version connectable to the telephone networks to 3G will cost $ 500. "Computers are a new chrome model, which does not rely on you the burden of managing the computer," said Google co-founder Sergey Brin at the conference. Updates Chrome OS will be automatic and controlled by Google, which limits the user's choice, but facilitates the deployment of fault corrections or new versions.

For Mr. Brin, the model of Microsoft or Apple, which lets the user manage their computer every day, "is a bad model." The model proposed by Google, however, raises other questions. Most user data being stored online, Google will show both that the information is well protected and the user will retain complete control.

More generally, the functioning of Chromebooks without Internet access remains an important issue: many features, presented as central, only work with access to the Network. To circumvent this problem, Google has announced that it relaunched its particular project "Gears", a module that can store data offline Gmail or Google Docs.
