Movement control: Microsoft sold eight million Kinect systems

Microsoft has with these sales figures, which were announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, exceeded its own forecast, which was five million Kinect systems. Sony had been able to deduct from its competitor, the Move motion control, in the first two months of the launch of only 4.1 million units.

In this figure, however, the Christmas business was not included, Sony's system started earlier than Microsoft's. Sony's move is with Kinect in terms of numbers difficult to compare: The system relies on individually sold controller and a camera while Kinect is just a piece of hardware, with which several people can play simultaneously.

Move a single controller will cost about 60 €, a package of controllers, camera and a demo disc about 80 €. Also available are so-called navigation controller with a joystick control for more complex variations. Some games can be played with one and two Move-standard controllers such as Sony's sports game collection "Sports Champions.

Kinect a sensor with costs, together with a game currently in this country about 120 €. For both systems, however, one needs the corresponding game console, an Xbox 360 or a Playstation 3 (see left column). The Kinect camera that captures the player's body in space, and calculates the position of its joints, enjoys even among hackers and programmers already very popular.

Microsoft had fought against such misappropriation first, but then turned.
