Crysis 2 ": New York insane, but New York released?

"Looks like Miss Liberty took on the chin," quipped a Marine deployed in New York City completely devastated. Three years after the first episode, the futuristic shooter Crysis 2 abandons the scenery of a tropical island to place the player in the chaotic urban jungle and the Big Apple. In 2023, the American metropolis, ravaged by a strange virus, faces the chaos caused by private military company, the Cell, and alien invasions.

Alcatraz and one soldier, but with an extremely powerful experimental Nanosuit, can cope with this dual threat. In this shooting game in first person, developed by Crytek and published by Electronic Arts is the first New York City and its many mutations that take the role of protagonist.

Passing by Wall Street, the Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square or Central Park, the player gradually sinks into a megalopolis "insane". Throughout the missions, the American city is gradually becoming wild, ravaged vegetation and in confused alien aesthetics. This atmosphere is well captured by the soundtrack to the strains Lynchian which works wonders in the early sequences - mode docudrama - dark designs of the game The other strength of Crysis 2 lies in its screenplay, which draws on many references pictures, including Robocop.

If, like the main character, the protagonists are few, they help to make the single player campaign worthy of the convolutions of Total Recall, while maintaining a tenuous connection with the first episode. The characters are actually rather conventional adjuvants. But the evil designs of the real enemy of Alcatraz enough to keep the player in suspense.

With their story, the designers also managed to subtly question the status of hero. If the soldier Alcatraz has extraordinary powers because he impersonates a "Prophet". Periodically, the writers also point out the weakness of character. In one scene, a doctor explains all injuries suffered by the navy without his armor, "is a walking corpse." This weakening of the hero is present even in the stage where regular, the player must control a rampant Alcatraz or extremely weak.

NEW YORK VERTICALITY addition to his script, Crysis 2 manages to offer a fairly new game mechanics, although this may put off players from the first episode. In the previous installment, the designers had developed a system that allows great freedom of action, which is no longer the case in Crysis 2.

The game Crytek does not fall so far in the script to the death of the very interventionist Call of Duty. Crysis 2 achieves a synthesis between these two approaches: the interventionist phases alternate with areas of open combat. The game even introduces a few changes to the logic of "corridors" of many shooters, using the verticality of the buildings in New York.

The capabilities offered by the combination can also leave a mechanical stereotyped based on attack-defense, which became a standard many competing titles. By choosing to hide, to increase its resilience, or taking the tactical option before going into battle, crysis 2 brings renewal to the shooter in first person view.

And if its multiplayer mode is fairly classic, Crysis 2 shows that it is much more than just a showcase for the game engine CryEngine 3. Just like Epic Games, famous for UnrealEngine and developer of successful Gears of War, Crytek shows that the battle against the aliens Alcatraz goes far beyond a simple demonstration of the technical capabilities of its engine.
