Samsung mobile number one in Europe

Samsung Electronics overtook Nokia's position as the leading manufacturer of mobile phones in Western Europe in the first quarter, overtaking for the first time the Finn in its regional market, according to an IDC study published Thursday, May 5 Sales in the South Korean group rose 5% in the region over the first three months of the year versus the first quarter of 2010, with a market share reaching 29%, while sales of Nokia fell 10 % with a market share slip to 28%, according to IDC.

On the specific market for smartphones, Finnish has been supplanted by Apple in Europe, where Nokia's market share dropped to 20% against 41% a year ago. Nokia dominated since the 1990s the market for mobile phones but the group, which still makes most of these handsets rivals due to its strong presence in emerging markets, missed the turn smartphones.

"These results show how volatile this market is and how it is important not to underestimate the trends," he said in a statement Francisco Jeronimo, an analyst at IDC. "Nokia is one of the most recognized and appreciated in Europe, but Samsung has been able to identify trends in the first and responded more quickly," he says.

PARTNERSHIP WITH MICROSOFT NOKIA Samsung was notably faster than Nokia to offer touchscreen devices and a wide range of multimedia phones affordable. The South Korean group has also quick to adopt the Android platform Google's very popular. To restart, the Finnish group put particular importance on a partnership with computer giant Microsoft.
