Charger "universal" in 2011 for mobile phones in Europe

Chargers for mobile devices. IAC / Ian UsherLa European Commission announced Wednesday, December 29, the arrival in Europe chargers "universal" for mobile phones. New standards, based on a connection-type "micro-USB", just published and the first universal chargers that meet these standards should reach the European market "during the first months of 2011," said Brussels in a statement.

There are a wide variety of chargers for mobile phones within the EU, including within the same brand. Many can be used with a specific aircraft type, which complicates the lives of consumers and creates a large amount of electronic waste. "Incompatibility of mobile phone chargers is a major inconvenience for users, but also a huge environmental problem.

A user wishing to change mobile phone must usually purchase a new charger and get rid of the old, even if it is in good condition, "argues the Commission. AN ENGAGEMENT ÉQUIPEMENTIERSL'idée a universal charger is discussed for a long time. The major manufacturers, including Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Samsung, were signed last year including a memorandum of agreement to standardize their chargers.

These standards only apply, however, that smartphones like the Blackberry, iPhone or terminals using the Android OS from Google. Brussels says the aircraft of this type should penetrate the market within two years "and finally replace those functions most basic, allowing only call and send SMS.
