New CEO Larry Page: Google-friendly face

Larry Page inherits top manager Eric Schmidt as Google's CEO. The transfer of power acts as a complete surprise, co-founder of the Internet giant is as shy and publicity-shy. This shows one thing: Page has been underestimated terrific. Who is in the public eye, about which there is usually a Wikipedia entry.

If you read the German entry through the Google co-founder Larry Page, one can conclude that this man is at best a little bit is important: modest three paragraphs was short of the record on this Friday afternoon, although the important message is already in it was: Page takes over the group's top.

This is typical. Larry Page, as Lawrence Edward Page 1973 in Michigan, is indeed probably the lead co-founder of Google, but for many, a largely unknown quantity. Typical is or has been that he rarely says much. If he appears in public, then be friendly, almost shy appearing. His throaty voice seems as fragile and often made sure to keep small, casually interspersed jokes interrupted endless lectures on topics preferably bone-dry.

Page is different than many other American IT entrepreneurs an experienced entertainer, but a nerd as he is in the book. A nerd from a family of nerds even in the computer science professor dad, mom was a programmer and the older brother, an IT entrepreneur who once founded a company and sold them for 400 million dollars to Yahoo.

Probably the creation of large companies in such families is recorded as normal: Pages background may have contributed to his early training for future jobs began. He is said to have been constructed in children's time a working inkjet printer out of Lego bricks. It would almost be disappointed if there were such legends not least - for adventure stories, youthful transgressions, scandals or other spices in the thin soup of Page's biography seeks to avail.

Competent, but most likely wooden know him from photographs in which he is inclined to see either behind his founding partner Sergey Brin or long corporate arm Eric Schmidt. He almost always smiles, always standing or sitting, he very, very straight. The stage, he sought only rarely, such as the legendary keynote CES 2006, a milestone in the tech Drögheit.

No question: the limelight qualities of Steve Jobs or Larry Ellison go from page completely. However, his skill is beyond question, he is apparently just a camera man - even Bill Gates took more than twenty years before he could step on a stage without looking as if he had just strangled a budgie.

Significantly, as Page himself appears in the internal circle of Google employees. The following video shows him in October 2009 at a house event. Anyone who tries to approach the person page on such roads, shall in this feel almost like a Boy Scout: The video released on YouTube is one of the most detailed, best recordings of a page presence.

Until 21 January 2011, 12.35 clock wanted to see exactly 2961 people the video. We can therefore say with complete justification, that the interest in Larry Page was far more restrained: that it is now Page and not the less publicity-shy, apparently biting strength Sergey Brin, Schmidt replaces as company driver, suggests that this perception of his Person was not quite complete.

Even in this video, he puts so - as in all public video documents - not only a marked rigidity of the day, but real sovereignty. People who know him or have met describe him as very self-conscious contemporaries, who are fully aware of their own influence - a smiling, but tough authority.

If one looks for in his footsteps, whether on the Web or in the press archives, however, you will hardly find. About Eric Schmidt, Sergey Brin, even on Marissa Mayer, the "employee No. 18" by Google, there are plenty of portraits in order to fill Brockhaus thick volumes. Pages traces are found in more subordinate clauses, short quotations, in so far rather rare appearances.

A background-husband? Yes, but the one who pulls the strings in all of these things are but so many indications of the underestimation of Mr. Page, that one wonders how it could ever happen. Once before, from 1998 to 2001, Page was indeed at the head of the company. Who else? Google based on his idea, originally conceived as an academic research.

Because Page was quick to see how much potential in it, he laid his doctorate on ice, first sought a programming partner (Sergey Brin), then a team. When the attempt failed to inspire the time leading Internet company serving the technology of the typical Google page rankings, he made a business out of it.

The technique is by no means page-ranking, because it Internet pages (Pages) analyzed. The technological core of Google's success is named after its inventor. The quickly showed that he is not only an engineer, a scientist and inventor, but also has a keen nose for business. Against the trend of the time offered to Google Page not a powerful venture capital financier, but peddled by various donors to zusammenzubekommen smaller sums.

His goal from day one in control of the project will not be given. It succeeded brilliantly. Even after the IPO was the founding duo, now extended by ex-Novell CEO Eric Schmidt, manager for the triumvirate, enough shares to control Google unchallenged to this day. Back to Page also means back to a "softer" image so it may well be sober reason, the position of the man that Google represents to the outside, again manned by page.

"Ready to lead" was the one stated the current CEO Eric Schmidt, Google launched a phase in which the company swelled from 200 employees to 24 400 employees. This way but lost the company - especially in the last two or three years - much of her youthful sex appeal of its charm, its community-oriented, shirt-sleeved image.

Schmidt, the cool, smooth acting manager, you never really dared to humor. So many of his comments were meant in jest sometimes only arrogant over - there were other really well. The image of a nice "Do not be evil" company that wanted to improve the world covered, not with that of the multi-billion group with the overflowing data starvation, led by the supposed cynical Schmidt.

Which came in last time on mostly to Google to defend against massive allegations: Privacy offense, market monopolization, intrusions into the privacy of users. From the buddy Google in the public perception of the octopus had become - the Microsoft of the new millennium, if you will, the new bogeyman of the IT world.

If there still is one, which stands for Google's old image, then this is Larry Page. As a top manager of the group he was responsible in the past decade, product development, while Schmidt brushed the company on efficiency and profit. Efficiency has also eaten with spoons Page of engineering, he still looks just like he wanted to play in truth only.

Less bureaucratic, it should now be back under his aegis. "Back to the roots", indicates that, more and less pin-striped shirt-sleeves and ties. This should also, however, probably be the need to stimulate creativity of the company. "I'll deal with the reality," added Page said in a 2009 interview on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos again, "not about image." Uwe Jean Heuser, who recorded the meeting for the "time", quoted Page then with a joke: In times of crisis, Page said, one should not wear a tie.

This reduces the blood supply to the brain. Would it be possible that this was not a joke?
