Searchand Copy: Microsoft taps in the Google case

For the results of its search engine, Microsoft is apparently also Bing results of the competition. Google smuggled links to pointless strings in their own index - a little later they should have turned up at the rival. New York / Berlin - In the competition between Google and Microsoft on the search market, it is again like in a thriller.

Google turned in an elaborate secret operation to a trap for his rival to prove that Microsoft's search engine Bing on Google hits back attacks to improve their results. According to Google data Bing was caught in several cases. Google is not published as usual, otherwise the story in a blog entry, but told them the exclusive blogger Danny Sullivan, who has been 15 years with Internet search engines.

Sullivan on Tuesday published a detailed report on his blog Search Engine Land. According to Google fell last October that there was suddenly a higher overlap between the two search engines: the top ten hits and the most suitable result which is at the top. From then on, Google had become suspicious, Sullivan wrote, referring to Amit Singhal, who oversees Google the search engine algorithm.

Therefore, Google introduced a trap: The results for several futile searches like "mbzrxpgjys" were manipulated. The calculus was simple: Are these requests from Bing for the same hits as Google, Microsoft must have used in any way on the Google results. After preparing the Google employees should make requests from home in Microsoft's Internet Explorer and click on the search result as well.

The report shows that it took two weeks - from 17 31 December - to Bing for "mbzrxpgjys" or indicating "hiybbprqag" the same results as Google. On Tuesday afternoon turned up at Microsoft's search engine for these searches, only the link to Sullivan's article because they contain the specified strings.

Sullivan finished the presentation, but with screenshots from the previous days. Google suggested as a possible explanation, that the Internet Explorer toolbar that may Bing forward information about search requests and then referring to Microsoft sites and the data to refine the search algorithm used.

Google see this as trickery, "said Singhal. Bing-chief Stefan Weitz said at Sullivan's request that the search engine relying on a variety of information and the Google experiment "look like a hack to manipulate this process. The search engine business is the cornerstone of Google - the majority of the billions in profits the company still put the ads that are displayed in the context of search results.

Microsoft has tried for years to break with massive investment, the dominance of Google in Internet search, but could not wrest with the launch of Bing only a few percentage points of market share. The Windows group writes with his Internet business for years so many losses.
