Stephan Bole: "The video game industry is not hardware, but content"

Nintendo released in France, Friday, March 25, a new version of its handheld console, Nintendo 3DS. Stephan Bole, CEO of Nintendo France, outlines the strategy of the Japanese company. What are your sales targets in 3DS Tech News Buzz? The number of sales that we announced is 4 million units in Tech News Buzz for late March.

In Japan, we are almost 800 000 consoles sold at the end of last week. We also have very high levels of reservation in Europe and the United States. In France, we are more than 55,000 reservations, and we expect to exceed 70 000. We're booking at levels higher than the Wii and Nintendo DS models.

The special feature of your new console is to enable 3D graphics, without glasses. How do you respond to users who are concerned about the recommendations on the duration of use for a product aimed at younger? Nintendo is a prudent and responsible society. We recommend using two-dimensional for children under six years.

We decided to put all the precautions on the 3D, which are also those of all the industrial sector, such as vendors of 3D TVs or those that operate in 3D movies at the cinema. In addition, we implemented a slider, allowing the player to choose his comfort. The list of top games available leaves ample room for third party publishers like Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Capcom and Konami.

Why? There is a difference in the heart of Nintendo's business and our competitors. Prior to console manufacturers, publishers and therefore we are game designers. However, third party publishers are very active on the Wii and Nintendo DS. The idea that Nintendo would not be welcoming vis-à-vis the third party publishers is wrong.

End 2010, DS, 135 titles have sold over a million copies in Tech Buzz News, 84 were third-party publishers. On the Wii, 99 titles have surpassed one million units, and 70 came from outside publishers. The catalog for the DS was a very clear target "children". With Street Fighter 4, or Pro Evolution Soccer on 3DS, it seems that developers are also counting on an audience more "adult", is a willingness to Nintendo? We aim for the widest audience possible.

About 50% of the world's population does not play video games. When compared to the music, for example, the industry, which is said to be huge, is not that much: there is an enormous growth potential. Pragmatically, we know that the first buyers of the console are the "core gamer" [experienced players].

Some of the games available at launch is their destiny. However, in games like Street Fighter 4, it addresses both the "core gamer". But thanks to the ergonomics of the console, it is possible to expand the traditional target. We tend to segment, artificially, the population of players.

The player experience is much richer and multi platforms: consoles, PCs, and eventually smartphones. The video game industry is not a "hardware" [equipment], but content. If the content is different and hard on a platform, it will create custom, not the reverse. The arrival of 3D can reduce the piracy of console? How? The problem of piracy in the industry is not new.

We try to resolve it first with technical protection. Connected consoles offer the opportunity of regular updates that make the task more complicated pirates. But no system is perfect for permanently halt piracy. In parallel, we continue our legal action, either with the entire profession or with devices like Hadopi.

Hadopi is a good initiative, it has the merit of clarifying things, and to contribute to say what is legal and what is not. We finally have a lot of pending, against companies that produce or sell systems that promote piracy. Rovio, creator of Angry Birds, has raised $ 42 million investment, and claims more than 70 million downloads on mobile devices, and announced a version on Facebook.

This type of game is it a threat to Nintendo? It has been several years since we said that the mobile game will dethrone the game on handheld consoles. Yet during this cycle, we never sold much of handhelds in the history of this industry. The major difficulty for developers on mobile, is the question of value.

When there are 10 000 games available on a download platform, available for less than $ 1, how do we emerge, and especially to make money? According to analyst Michael Pachter, the arrival of the 3DS is not sufficient, given Sony and Microsoft, which are particular to launch motion sensing systems, like on the Wii.

What do you think? When KINECTS Microsoft and Sony Playstation Move were launched at the end of last year, it sold more Wii than PS3 or Xbox 360 in all countries, so there is no had an impact. Without revealing scoop, when a console is launched, we are already thinking about the one after.
