There are chances of timing that is hard to believe. Take March 25. That day, Nintendo will launch in Europe and the United States its new handheld console 3DS, the first of its kind to offer games in relief without glasses. At the same time, will begin selling two of Apple iPad, a tablet computer that is becoming increasingly oriented toward entertainment and video games with its improved screen and two cameras.
These two simultaneous launches symbolize the battle raging in the field of mobile gaming. Land on which Nintendo is king since 1989 and appeared on the market for original Game Boy (120 million sold in Tech News Buzz), the 3DS is ultimately only the umpteenth variation. After featuring the color, widescreen, dual screen and touch screen, Nintendo DS, heir to the Game Boy, is now providing relief for games in three dimensions a surprising quality.
For the Japanese company, this technological leap is both a logical and necessary. Logical because in 1995, Nintendo had already tried the challenge of 3D-Virtual Boy console, a virtual reality helmet closest to the prosthesis as accessory games. The result: a dismal failure. With 3DS, Nintendo takes his revenge and then entered his machine in a larger movement that sees the film, television and put the game to 3D.
The output of the 3DS also responds to a pressing need: to stay in the forefront against the competition. While Sony announces new PSP and a phone built for the pixel Xplay fun and Apple's AppStore is a toy library attrac-tive, Nintendo is obliged to provide new gaming experiences to maintain its supremacy.
A few days spent with the Nintendo 3DS suggest that the machine should fulfill its function. Of the tested games (Street Fighter IV, Nintendogs, PES 2011 and others), the 3D effect is spectacular. It is of course far from what one can feel with a full screen 127 centimeters and a pair of glasses, but the depth is real, the image sharpness and very good player immersion to visit provided that it remains well in front of the screen.
A button is used to adjust the 3D effect to his view or return to 2D mode, which consumes less battery. Games of platform or adventure like Zelda or Mario, it is now easier to grab objects and move through space in three dimensions, because the 3D engine of this type of games are now on display to the extent of their abilities.
The analog stick also offers more possibilities in terms of gameplay. "There is real depth perception," said Damien Moret, director of brand development at Ubisoft. The French publisher has taken the lead on with 3DS no fewer than eight games available for launch. "We worked for what was most comfortable for the eye," says Damien Moret.
That's why we do not offer to shoot images with jerky tiring for the eyes. "Beyond the games, the console offers a variety of thoughtful entertainment like the Pass Street mode that allows two machines exchange of information remotely (Mii, photos ...). Both cameras take pictures in 3D and if the quality is not exceptional, the pictures can be inserted into the mini-games fun.
The Nintendo 3DS s 'finally opened to the reality-enhanced ... like the PSP and iPhone. Nintendo 3DS, exit March 25, 249.99 euro. Reprinted from the edition of 20.03.11
