Three operators join forces in e-payment deal with Paypal

Telephone operators Bouygues Telecom, Orange (France Telecom) and SFR (Vivendi), have joined, Thursday, Feb. 3, the computer services group Atos Origin to create Buyst, a secure payment service on the Internet and mobile phones. The system will be available in France in mid-2011 and offered to customers of the three operators, representing more than 50 million consumers.

Eric Gontier, the Chief of Buyst, said purchases made via a mobile could represent 10% of eCommerce sales, an "estimated at just over 6 billion euros". This new system allows customers to pay from any connected terminal: computer, smartphone, tablet or TV. The customer will however be near him his mobile phone.

After identifying himself by giving his phone number and password, he will receive a code via SMS Disposable payment. COMPETE WITH PAYPAL On the other side of the chain, Buyst must convince the largest possible number of merchants accepting such payments. But Atos Origin provides a basis of thirty thousand companies ready to use.

With this platform, online payment, large telephone companies want to compete with PayPal, but Google and Apple, which account for an increasing share of value added produced by electronic services online. The initiative is part of the broader commitment of operators to diversify their sources of income, then they are, in telephony, facing a gradual decline in call rates.
