The new generation of GPUs in 28 nm are about, and could be ready by 2012. The information was leaked a roadmap (roadmap) of AMD that displays data on new products in late 2011 and early next year. AMD would be the first to innovate in designing and manufacturing the new GPU in the process evolved during the 28-nanometer manufacturing.
We saw the ATi 4770, the first in 40 nanometers, which represented a huge difference on other 4000 Series. The new GPU is called Chelsea, and a few more details are known. Obviously it is too early to determine what improvements could bring this new GPU, but it seems clear that it is a leap very different from those in what we have now.
We are going from 40 to 28 nanometers will improve energy efficiency and performance, in addition to reducing operating temperatures. The new GPU will start producing in late 2011 and sold in the first quarter of 2012 with a presentation that is expected to be at CES 2012. Evolution does not will stick to all models, and as always will be progressive. Without having more specific data, all we can determine is that we are talking about AMD 7000 Series, which will start arriving with Blackcomb, Whistler and Seymour - ranges very high, medium and low - still keep the 40 nanometers.
Also under this process we have at Heathrow, a high-end GPU designed and face but to 2012. Also in the 2012 will be when we see the first in 28 nm GPU code-named Chelsea and Thames, midrange and lower-middle respectively but which are expected to offer superior performance to the previous generation, both the released currently as Whistler and Seymour.
There are no concrete figures yet. And finally, early in the second half of 2012 will be when it launches Wimbledon, top-end GPU under 28 nanometers, and probably an AMD 7950 or 7970. It was April 2009 when it introduced the 4770, which was then considered as the best value for money of the time.
NVIDIA took a few months (October 2009) to launch its first 40 nanometer, but had a great impact on the market. AMD to overtake Nvidia again, again and if the latter does not intervene. Personally I have my doubts, since NVidia has shown sleeping in recent years and may have something big prepared.
