Five pocket external hard drives to carry your data everywhere

The way in which new cloud storage systems is affecting sales of hard drives is a highly topical issue. As much as there are storm clouds on the horizon of such devices, today still the most practical way to carry large amounts of files back and forth. The portable hard drive sector has more variety than meets the eye.

In Tech News Buzz've made a selection of five of these peripherals to cover five different needs. The first hard drive of our choice is also the last to hit the market, and is notable for its extreme thinness. Seagate has managed to reduce the housing Seagate Slim GoFlex only 124 × 78 × 9 mm, just a little more than measuring its internal drive, a disk of 320GB at 7,200 rpm.

The extreme thinness is added the advantage of USB 3.0 for faster transfer rate. The biggest problem may be this hard disk is cooling. In principle, the anodized aluminum is expected to dissipate heat well, but we reserve opinion until more testing. Although not far from the Seagate model slimness (73 × 118 × 12 mm), the greatest virtue of the new Kingston HyperX 3.0 Max lies in the speed of transfer.

The company has combined SSD internal drive with USB 3.0. The result is a disc that can move a 10GB file in just over a minute. Transfer speeds are around 195MBps for reading and 160Mbps in writing. Available in 64, 128, and 256, the biggest problem with Max HyperX is its price, which starts from 193 euros.

The speed, in this case, passes through a toll road. While waiting for new connections Thunderbolt developed by Apple and Intel are implemented in units to carry, the best access alternative for users of Apple equipment remains the Firewire 800. Our choice in this case comes from the hand of Western Digital My Passport series and Firewire.

Available in capacities of 320, 500 and 640GB drives housing these measures 124 × 83 × 18.5 mm and also includes USB 2.0 connection and whether to connect to a PC. The Firewire MyPassport come preformatted for Mac and have a small LCD screen to check the free space without having to connect.

Lacie still reigns as a shockproof units refers to the LaCie Rugged, classic and drive in the sector that has been recently upgraded to USB 3.0 connection. Equipped, inside, to 7,200 RPM drives, this hard drive for adventurers and workers who need rugged equipment achieves transfer rates up to 110MBps.

Although thicker than other models, the LaCie USB 3.0 Rugged hold drops to 2.2 meters and is available in 500GB, 750GB and 1TB. Unless we go to desktop external drives, it is quite difficult to find handheld units that offer capacity above 1TB. The one that convinced us in this regard is the Iomega USB 3.0 Prestige, a family of hard drives has recently revamped its design, also incorporating USB 3.0 connections.

The device most spacious in this series reaches 1.5TB capacity, a negligible amount considering its size. The fifth device shuts down our selection of hard drives to go, but we know that we have left many in the pipeline. You "which añadiríais?
