AMD PowerXpress Switchable Graphics, NVidia response Optimus

It was hoped that sooner or later hit the market response to technology AMD NVidia Optimus. And that product is now marketed under the name of AMD PowerXpress Switchable Graphics, present even in a handful of notebooks. AMD PowerXpress Switchable Graphics has released in the last MacBook Pro, as well as in some recent models of HP laptops.

Basically it is a mechanism for exchange of hot GPU, similar - or identical - to bid for the competition. Enable, without rebooting the operating system that your computer's GPU running exchange between the integrated processor (Intel HD Graphics 3000) or dedicated (AMD or AMD 6750M 6450m).

This change may be made effective with a few simple clicks and without rebooting the system, and its purpose is to save a few minutes of battery life when choosing the GPU according to our requirements at all times. This technology is an old acquaintance. Back in June 2008 we talked about it, but then was restricted to use on computers with AMD also CPUAMD and GPU under the ATi brand.

PowerXpress AMD has grown up and will now work with Intel CPU, as it does in the new Apple hardware. It was clear that some time this was the way forward in the future, although there is still some automation. He is currently the user must select which GPU to use, and it is hoped that the next step is when the computer choose the GPU sharing and how long to do so.

Both NVidia and AMD Optimus PowerXpress are more or less recent technology with, at most, a couple of years old and have not been implemented in all the computers on the market, so that their growth is still quite slow. Growth in the CPU market with integrated GPU is unstoppable, so that both the solutions of the manufacturers have a long future ahead.
