Internet traffic reduced to Bahrain

According to figures from Arbor Networks, a U.S. firm specializing in monitoring data interchange, Internet traffic has been in Bahrain since the beginning of the week a net decrease of between 10% and 20% from the average of the three previous weeks. A fall that could indicate a hardening of Web filtering.

Classified as "under surveillance" in the list of "Internet enemies" of the organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Bahrain practice strict filtering of Internet sites are banned political, religious or criticism of the royal family . Youtube or Wikipedia pages are locked. Google Earth is also prohibited, because the service provides access to aerial views of the residences of the royal family.

"BAHRAIN TO STRENGTHEN ITS WEB FILTERING" Batelco, the leading provider of Internet access (ISP) in the country, on Thursday presented its apologies to its customers, explaining, like its rival Zain, that disturbances were taking place on the network due to a "hard use". ISPs argue that the strong consulting videos of events is the main cause of the slowdown.

However, measures of Arbor Networks does not support these explanations. The numbers of American society show that the volume of traffic is decreasing. And no traces of peak attendance, which could have caused congestion. "Our data, collected from a hundred sources in Tech News Buzz whole, suggest that Bahrain has significantly enhanced its web filtering to meet the rising political dissent", says the company.
