The National Agency's powers strengthened cyber

The National Security Information Systems (Anssi) is now responsible to respond "immediately" in case of computer attacks "violent and paralyzing" the infrastructure of the state. Since February 13, the institution has seen its powers strengthened by a decree giving it the authority function of national defense information systems.

"If a major attack, there is need for immediate response and should not be complicated process of interdepartmental coordination," said Francis Delon, Secretary General for Defence and National Security (SGDSN), during a press conference in Paris. "The Anssi will then hand, give instructions and decide whether to adopt such a system to contain and limit the consequences attacks" on government activities, he added.

Currently all jurisdictions must follow the instructions in the Anssi and "by summer, an ordinance to allow Anssi have this role with communications operators," said Mr. Delon. According to the director of Anssi Patrick Pailloux, its services will "require operators (private) to block traffic from hosts that relay attacks or ban USB keys.

Founded in July 2009, Anssi is attached to the General Secretariat of Defence and National Security (SGDSN), a service of prime minister.
