Project Kal-el: Nvidia will bring the quad-core tablets in summer

He who strikes first, do it twice, and Nvidia did it first with the dual core. Tegra 2 is the dominant hardware platform in the market, and although competition is doing well, especially Texas Instruments, now want to make a technical knockout to the rest presenting their mobile quad-core processors to the public.

This so-called third generation of Tegra, presented at the Mobile World Congress Android devices will this August, so you may be putting the remaining batteries. Right now they have to show are prototypes, but what we bring into production in summer is intended to tablets, to have the mobile version at Christmas.

Nvidia did not only discourage competition ahead of this year, but presented his performance schedule until 2014, keeping the idea of new version of Tegra per year. The above Draft Kal-El, who will become Tegra 3, will be followed by Wayne in 2012, Logan in 2013, and Stark in 2014. Speaking of the progress in processing power, Kal-El is five times higher than the current Tegra 2, but is expected to Stark, possibly Tegra 6, is 100 times more potent than Tegra 2, only three years of evolution.

To demonstrate the possibilities of the new quad-core processor, Nvidia used a prototype of Android tablet capable of working with video in 1440p format, serving as a source for a monitor with a resolution of 2560 × 1600 pixels. The quality and smoothness of the video is great as we can read people who were there.

The next thing was to compare games running on Tegra 2 and Kal-El, and although no details of them because they are still in development, graphics performance is three times higher: 60 images per second, 20 in Tegra 2. The system has twelve new GPU cores, is able to work with resolutions up to 2560 x 1600 pixels, and has stereo 3D support.

Following the demonstrations, there were some benchmarks in CoreMark figures were achieved over that of an Intel Core 2 Duo T2000, and that the current prototype is still much to be tuned. Another is land where they are working on optimizing the hardware to run on the Internet, getting a web page rendering faster, much like we find in a conventional PC, again we see compared to a Core 2 Duo: Era inevitable that the presentation will talk about the power consumption of Kal-El, to what Nvidia said that the performance in this respect is better than the current Tegra 2, as an example they put the 1440p video playback, which CPU and chipset were consuming only 400 milliwatios, and noted that the component that consumes the most is the screen, its backlight, and that's something that they can not touch.

If no one remedy, and seeing that Nvidia wants to make friends with Android, Tegra 3 can be the platform of choice for Google to develop its successful future versions of the operating system. Competition will not manufacture hardware equivalent developments until 2012. Via | Laptop Magazine | Android and Me.
